Field
Day is a yearly preparedness exercise sponsored by the
American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association
for amateur radio.
To
the best of his recollection, Arthur
Arestad (W8WTL), who has been a resident of Tipp City
for over 40 years, says that 2001 was the first time Field
Day was conducted in Tipp City.
Tipp City amateur radio operators worked
around the clock using emergency power to make
contacts with other amateur radio operators across the United States,
Canada, and Puerto Rico, just to name a few of the places contacted.
Field
Day is designed to test the ability of amateur
radio operators to set up and operate portable stations under
emergency conditions, such as the loss of electricity during
storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and other disasters. In
the event of an emergency, Tipp City is fortunate to have
many amateur radio operators to volunteer their services.
In 2008, Governor Strickland has proclaimed June 23-29, 2008 Amateur Radio Operators Appreciation Week. Mayor Tim E. Evans presented a proclamation to Tipp City area Hams designating June 23-29, 2008 as Amateur Radio Week in Tipp City, Ohio.
2009 Field Day in Tipp City will be held at the Tipp City park located at 3rd and Park Streets Tipp City, Ohio. The date of this years event is June 27th thru 28th. However, antenna raising and equipment setup begins on Friday June 26th after 2 PM. The contest starts at 2 PM Saturday and ends 2 PM Sunday. This year as in the past, we will have 6 or more stations available for operating. Most communications mode will be represented i.e., Voice (SSB), CW, PSK31, RTTY and more. Please come and join us.
